Can You Drink Coffee While You’re On a Cleanse?
No, but you can drink this...
LOOKING TO GO ON A CLEANSE AND NOT SURE IF YOU CAN STILL KEEP THE COFFEE?
You’re not alone. I get asked this question almost every time I meet a client and they decide to clean up their diet.
Full disclosure: I’m not a coffee drinker myself.
I’m sensitive to caffeine, so I never have the urge to drink a daily ‘cup o’ joe,’ but I do know what it’s like weaning myself off of sugar—and I don’t wish those withdrawal headaches upon anyone.
Caffeine withdrawals are painful. Headaches, fatigue, decreased motivation, and borderline-psycho levels of irritability. NOT FUN!
That’s why I don’t recommend drinking coffee in the first place.
WE WANT TO BRING OUR BODIES BACK INTO AN ALKALINE STATE (WHETHER CLEANSING OR NOT), AND COFFEE IS EXTREMELY ACIDIC WHICH PLACES US ON THE TOXIC SIDE OF THE PH SCALE.
So as you are detoxing from coffee, the best thing to do is to incorporate lots of dark, leafy greens into your diet to fight inflammation and overcome feelings of fatigue.
Two Plant-Based Coffee Replacements While on a Cleanse
1. E3 LIVE SHOTS
E3 Live is made up of blue-green algae, and is extremely potent. It’s packed with minerals, plant-protein, and is shown to increase your endurance.
Wow, healthy energy shot? Yes.
I’ve actually had clients wean off of coffee completely by taking E3 Live Shots in times when they would’ve reached for espresso. Trust me, it works.
2. MATCHA
Matcha is a great option for those of you who don’t think you’re ready to wean off caffeine completely, but want to take the plunge on getting away from coffee.
Matcha is a powerful form of Japanese green tea and is packed with antioxidants, amino acids, chlorophyll, and essential vitamins and minerals to keep your skin glowing and your energy levels up.
We have a Magic Mix Matcha Latte recipe that I recommend you have first thing in the morning. It’s easy, takes three minutes to prep and fuels you the same way coffee would first thing in the morning.
Magic Mix Matcha Latte:
12oz almond mylk
1 tsp. maca
1 tbsp. matcha
1 tbsp. maple syrup
1 tbsp. vanilla
½ tsp. coconut oil
Directions: Blend ingredients together, then pour in a pot to heat (or use a steam heater). Voila!
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO REALLY CAN’T KICK THE MORNING CUP OF JOE, I RECOMMEND THAT YOU GO FOR COLD BREW. IT’S WAY LESS ACIDIC THAN REGULAR BREWED COFFEE, AND WON’T CAUSE AS MUCH INFLAMMATION IN THE BODY AS A REGULAR CUP COFFEE WOULD CAUSE.
Last but not least—I’m going to leave you with a Magic Mix Pro-Tip for detoxing from coffee.
When you are having withdrawal headaches, opt for ginger shots instead of Advil. The ginger shots do just as good of a job as a painkiller—and won’t deteriorate your liver.
Let us know what you think of the Matcha recipe ;).
